IDEAS FOR NEXT VERSION:

(1)  Prevent an arbitrary file path from being specified by having a path
     prefix and stripping out all ".." from the provided path.
(2)  do not use globals
(3)  better error checking / reporting
(4)  handle minimmal concurrency (via retries)
(5)  handle defining the blank gif and dbname a better way
(6)  better checking on data base creation + first insert
(7)  allow for different format image output other than png
