IDEAS FOR NEXT VERSION:

(1)  do not use globals
(2)  better error checking / reporting
(3)  handle minimmal concurrency (via retries)
(4)  handle defining the dbname a better way
(5)  better checking on data base creation + first insert
(6)  allow for different format image output other than png
(7)  make the AjaxCounter be a little more generic and more configurable
(8)  handle multiple returns to the AJAX handler better
